Greggs has been working in partnership with Gamma Illumination for a number of years, during which time Gamma has provided Greggs with a range of quality LED and other low energy lighting solutions for its stores.  It was down to this working partnership and Gamma’s reliable service that Greggs once again approached Gamma to supply the lighting for its brand new coffee shop ‘Greggs moment’.

Located in its North East heartland, Greggs moment is a new style coffee shop from Greggs, designed to meet the requirements of  customers wanting a sit down coffee shop experience, as different from Greggs food on the go shops.  Research showed that there was a need for a warm, friendly and inviting environment that had an element of fun but incorporated a British feel.

Project solutions
Working with Philip Watt Design, Gamma proposed an ambient lighting scheme that would be sympathetic to the creative lighting brief yet provide the right amount of ambient lighting as well as an LED emergency lighting and signage solution.

Unlike many applications, Greggs wanted a low level ambient lighting scheme that didn’t sparkle or distract from the decorative light fittings as they were keen to create a cosy, relaxing and homely atmosphere.  After careful consideration of the requirements Gamma’s TTX LED downlight, powered with the Xicato LED module, was selected.  The 1000lm output, 3000K TTX fitting with a brushed aluminium bezel and dimming option provided discreet lighting that also offered the flexibility to increase or decrease the amount of light output to suit a change in requirements throughout the day.

In addition to the ambient lighting Gamma also supplied the LED emergency solution which incorporated a number of graphite satellite heads offering the freedom to be positioned independent of the TTX downlights they were integrated with.  LED exit signs were also used in strategic areas.  These LED emergency solutions offer dramatically improved reliability over conventional emergency lamp types.

Project results
Raymond Reynolds, Group Retail Director at Greggs, commented:  “This is a new style coffee shop for Greggs and the challenge has been to create an environment that our customers enjoy spending time in.  We are delighted with the coffee shop and the way we have created an inviting and welcoming space and so far early indications show that our customers are enjoying it too.”

As well as creating the required ambience for Greggs, the TTX fittings have a low energy consumption of 22W, and no re-lamping requirements over its 50,000 hour life (L70).
