A bespoke lighting system, designed and manufactured by Riegens, has been installed at the newly constructed state-of-the-art Law School at the University of Hertfordshire. The multi million pound facility, situated on the de Havilland Campus in Hatfield, will be one of the largest and most innovative law schools in the UK and will be opening its doors to students in September 2011.
The new Law Court Building will enhance academic and professional development through its newly advanced facilities and will include a full-scale courtroom with public gallery, working law clinic, purpose-built mediation centre and a dedicated CPD (continuing professional development) suite. Specified by AECOM, St Albans and installed by The Kirby Group, the lighting for the main teaching areas demanded a good high performance luminaire, one that could also be incorporated in the shape of the structure and comply with the architectural demands laid down by RMJM Architects.
Riegens provided a modified version of its Mineo luminaire as a continuous wire suspended up/downlighter with adapted with straight and angled infills to provide a sleek aesthetic design. The luminaire incorporates a double parabolic louvre to produce direct light and reflector to ensure even indirect light. Using 2 x 28W T5 lamps, the Mineo fitting was supplied with HF Dim DALI control gear with other control options available.
For the main student circulation areas with their alcoves and reveals, AECOM chose Riegens Ambit pelmet lighting. Using T5 lamps, Ambit provides a shadow free lighting system which is installed via a plug and play system. The modular fitting allows easy connection and, should layouts change during installation, the system can be easily altered without extra wiring costs. Ambit includes overlapping lamps to ensure no visible dark spots on continuous run projects.
