Holophane’s extensive range of high-efficiency exterior lighting luminaires and columns has proved invaluable in meeting a wide range of lighting requirements at the new Forth Valley Royal Hospital in Larbert.

Opened by HM The Queen in July 2011, the hospital has 860 beds, 16 operating theatres and 4,000 rooms and serves over 300,000 people in the Forth Valley area. It is set in extensive grounds, so the exterior lighting plays a key role in ensuring easy, safe access and good visibility of signage. Energy efficiency and cost of ownership were also key criteria in the specification of the exterior lighting.

Holophane QSM lanterns were specially modified for lighting the roads around the hospital, providing optimum visibility with the maximum spacing of columns. Each is equipped with a 70W metal halide lamp, combined with a precisely engineered reflector to control and direct the light to save energy and minimise waste and spillage.

Around the perimeter of the building, Holophane’s slimline Muralux floodlighting luminaires with 150W metal halide lamps have been installed, providing a discreet solution that blends with its surroundings. Muralux is available with five light distributions and the version chosen for this project delivers a forward-throw reflector to provide good lighting distribution away from the building. This minimises the number of luminaires needed to deliver the required light distribution – as well as the installed electrical load.

Holophane’s Vista Grande luminaires have been used extensively in car parks, the bus terminus and the entrance to the Accident & Emergency department. The Vista Grande family combines a sleek contemporary design with exceptional technical performance, achieving dramatic night-time effects while enhancing the daytime appearance of these spaces.

At the main entrance to the car park Vista Grande luminaires with a square light distribution ensure an even spread of light across the space to maximise safety. They are complemented by Vista Grande with asymmetrical distribution in other areas to make the most effective use of the light output. Holophane Vista luminaires are used in the area around the main entrance to the hospital.
