Glan uskThe combination of T5 luminaires and lighting controls from CP Electronics has helped to achieve an excellent BREAMM rating at the new Glan Usk School in Newport, South Wales.  The luminaires and controls were chosen by Building Services Contractor MJN Colston, who were responsible for the overall internal fit-out of the new education centre, which opened in January 2010.

The new state-of-the art facility was built for the council, under the Governments Private Finance Initiative (PFI), by Vinci Investments Ltd and has replaced Durham Road Infant/Junior schools and Rockfield Nursery.  Consisting of three single-storey teaching blocks radiating from a two-storey building, the centre accommodates 540 pupils.

CP’s Vitesse Plus, a fully functional lighting control system, was used throughout the establishment which includes classrooms, staff rooms, WC’s and corridors.  Vitesse Plus is an easy to use luminaire connection system that allows the lighting to be linked with detectors to control the illumination, thus allowing considerable energy savings to be achieved.  The Vitesse system is quick to install and also requires little or no commissioning, making it a good all-round choice for installers.

For classrooms requiring good, uniform light output, Vitesse was linked to CP’s VITP-MWS3D, a detector that automatically dims the lighting when the room has sufficient sunlight, or increases it when the natural lighting levels are low.  For toilet areas where a constant supply of light isn’t required, Vitesse links the luminaires to CP’s EBDS-PIR, a presence/absence ceiling mounted detector.  The detector is incorporated in a sleek housing making it unobtrusive and easy to install into narrow ceiling voids.  The EDBSPIR has no external control boxes, thus making installation quick and simple.

For corridors, CP’s MWS-3 flush mounted ceiling detector was installed.  Ideal for walkways or open plan areas, the MWS-3 utilises an adjustable sensor head which allows for a more precise detection.  The sensor head angle can be changed to provide different detection patterns.

Following the installation at Glan Usk School, Darren Griffiths of MJN Colston commented “The CP range provided us with a good selection of products that could be used on this project.  CP provides good quality products at competitive prices as well as being able to supply to tight deadlines which is invaluable for any project”.
