The Wigan Life Centre is a beautifully designed one-stop shop for public services. The multi function facility includes council and health service offices and leisure facilities which all wrap around a central glass atrium featuring a 25-metre swimming pool.
The modern architecture of the Life Centre contrasts with a former historic mining college of international repute, which faces the entrance. Between both structures is a large open, planted pedestrian walkway. A contemporary style of lighting was required for this leafy recreation area that complemented both old and new on either side. They selected Stela Round LED luminaires from Indal WRTL.
Wigan Council is committed to initiatives that save energy and actively works to reduce carbon emissions. They only use renewable energy derived from wind energy sources, to power the borough’s street lights. The Council’s street lighting team are also making a conscious effort to use the latest energy efficient materials as standard practice for all new street light installations. Stela Round is a perfect fit with this ethos achieving 78% reduction in CO2 emissions and providing high energy savings without dimming or switching off during the night. Light pollution is kept to a minimum. It has a 100,000 hour service life, and maintenance is virtually eliminated.
Despite only opening in September, the Life Centre has already been judged the best in the world by a prestigious panel of property industry experts. After taking top honours the UK Property Awards for Best Public Service Development, the Wigan project took centre stage at San Diego’s International Property Awards.
